Random Musings

A few random musings about healthcare...

- Why do people tell me that they want to check with their "real" doctor prior to trying Chiropractic care?  Don't they know that their "real" doctor is not a spine or back expert?  It would be the same as if someone told me that they want to check with their car mechanic if they think that Chiropractic might help them.

- Why do people continue to take pain killers to mask their neck/back pain or headaches?  Don't they know that pain is a signal to you that there is a problem that needs addressed?  It's like sticking a piece of tape over the "Check Engine Light" on your car's dashboard and expecting the problem to go away.

- Why are people willing to spend more money on their pet's healthcare than their or their children's care?  Don't get me wrong.  I love my dog and my cat, but get real.  If you neglect your health, pretty soon you won't be healthy enough to earn a living.  Then, you won't be able to take your furry friend to the vet anymore.

Bye for now,

New Year's Resolutions

Happy New Year to everyone!  I hope that last year was a good one for you, and that this new year is even better.  This is the time of year that a lot of folks make resolutions, the most common of which is to get into better physical shape.  Whether it is to loose weight, start an exercise regimen, or both.  Most of us understand the benefits of getting into better physical condition as a way to prevent health problems.  But, did you know that one of the best ways to prevent health issues is regular chiropractic treatments?  Yes, that's right.

Most of my patients understand that regular trips to the chiropractor help to prevent a relapse or recurrence of their neck pain or back pain, but the best kept secret in my office (at least it seems to be, although I try to make everyone aware or it) is that chiropractic treatments will help your overall state of health!  You see, because your spine protects your spinal cord, which controls every cell, tissue and organ of your body.  When the surrounding vertebrae get out of place it can pinch or irritate the nerves to those tissues.  When that happens, those organs can't function properly which can lead to disease.  By making sure that your "spine is in align", you will be healthier.  Don't just take my word for it, there is a lot of scientific research to prove it.

So, I hope that your New Year's resolution this year will include taking care of your spinal health along with the rest of your body!

My visit to my cardiologist

Just got back from my annual visit to my cardiologist.  I suffer, if you can call it that since it doesn't really give me any problems, from Atrial Fibriliation, which is a condition in which my heart has a little skip to it once in a great while.   Anyway, my cardiologist was rather pleased when I told him that I had recently lost 70 pounds since the start of the year.  He was incredulus, however, when I informed him that I eat bacon and eggs for every breakfast and that my cholesterol dropped 48 points.  It was if I just stuck some giant pin in his "healthy diet" misconception baloon.  I'm certain that he has always held the misplaced belief that in order to clear up your arteries you need to eat a "balanced diet" of mostly carbs, veggies, fruit, while limiting your fat.  Hopefully, my visit will encourage him to do a little research into what actually causes an increase in cholesterol, namely, too many carbs.

You see, research, at least the credible ones, have proven that when you eat too many carbs, your pancreas turns them into fat, which go into your bloodstream as well as into being stuffed away in your fat cells.  That increases your cholesterol.  When you don't have enough in your diet, your body gets the energy it needs by taking it from your fat cells, thus you loose weight.  And that will be weight lost due to using your fat and not your muscles as long as you eat enough protein along with it - thus, bacon and eggs for breakfast - yum, yum.

If you're still skeptical, take a look someday at the proportions of fat, protein and carbs that ranchers give to their cattle to "fatten them up for slaughter".  It just about mirrors the FDA's Food Pyramid.  No wonder why most of us these days are "fat"!
